Oak Spoon

Using riven carving techniques, from a piece of oak branch, this spoon has meaning beyond its perceived function. It was made with a very different yet specific purpose.

Although merely decorative, it was made as a memento for its keeper, who grew up climbing and playing in the tree throughout their childhood. For them, the tree was a defining feature of their childhood home. A sanctuary, where they could watch birds building nests, daydream, escape reality, and enter any world they chose. Their world.

When they realised that eventually they would leave their childhood home forever, along with the tree that may even be chopped down someday, they wanted to keep a part of it with them as a connection to those special, peaceful moments and memories spent in the big old oak tree.
