Sugarloaf - Iconic Artwork

We were honoured to collaborate with Sugarloaf, the restaurant within the luxurious Flockhill Lodge in the heart of the Southern Alps, to create a truly distinctive centrepiece for their space. Surrounded by dramatic mountains and pristine landscapes, Sugarloaf offers a unique fusion of sustainability, adventure and exceptional culinary experiences.

This statement artwork, measuring 1.6 meters in diameter, captures the essence of Canterbury’s iconic braided Waimakariri and Broken River that border the property. These rivers flow through and sustain the region’s unique landscapes and served as inspiration for Sugarloaf’s distinctive icon.

Crafted from layers of specially engineered, surprisingly lightweight concrete panels and a hand-hammered copper frame treated to achieve a rich patina, our artwork brings this design to life as a three-dimensional piece, seamlessly blending with the lodge’s warm, sophisticated aesthetic of wood, concrete, and metal.

This artwork is a striking statement piece, celebrating the beauty of movement and texture found in nature. We are proud to see it in such a remarkable setting, blending art and architecture seamlessly, and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Sugarloaf’s story.
